There are different varieties of honey, and all are made by bees collecting pollen. Some have medicinal properties for digestion, others to boost defenses, and Manuka honey, in addition to these benefits, is antibacterial. It is produced by the collection of nectar from *Leptospermum scoparium* in New Zealand.
It is very good for its sweet taste, with wildflower flavors, and helps to cure fungal and bacterial infections, eczema on the skin, and treats some acne-related problems. This honey is very complete in its properties as it also promotes the regeneration of damaged dermal tissues.

Properties of Manuka Honey
Its therapeutic action is antibacterial due to the natural hydrogen peroxide it contains.
When bees collect pollen from the flowers of *Leptospermum scoparium*, they include the enzyme glucose oxidase. This, when it comes into contact with the skin, is released and converts hydrogen peroxide into an element that kills bacteria. At a sufficient level to eliminate infections but without damaging the skin. These benefits of Manuka honey were indicated by Dr. Peter Molan of the University of Waikato in New Zealand.
The downside as an antibacterial remedy is that hydrogen peroxide disappears with the sun, light, and heat, so you must store these honeys in dark, cool places to keep all their properties intact. However, thanks to the wrapping provided by the bees’ nectar in this sticky liquid, it is stable and difficult to spoil.
Its healing properties are also well known. Applied directly to the skin, it improves wound healing and scar removal.
When consumed, it is good for throat irritation, difficulty swallowing, and roughness caused by dry cough. It is indicated for gingivitis.
It also improves digestion and relieves some ulcer symptoms. In general, Manuka honey is very good for stomach problems.
Antibacterial properties
These are clinically proven, and the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato is responsible for the analysis.
Grades of Manuka Honey
There is a numerical pattern that indicates antibacterial potency and for medicinal uses. The scale is called Unique Manuka Factor (UMF). This measures the ability to dehydrate bacteria with the honey’s acid.
The purity grades of Manuka Honey are:
- UMF 0 no medicinal value.
- UMF 5 contains therapeutic properties but is not suitable for medical use.
- UMF 10 improves skin conditions and boosts the immune system.
- UMF 15 medical use due to its antibacterial action.
- UMF 20 indicated for certain treatments. The twenty factor is the highest in the Unique Manuka scale.
In addition to hydrogen peroxide, it contains methylglyoxal or MG. This is a molecule common in honey in small proportions. In Manuka honey, there is a higher amount. MG acts by damaging bacteria. Its concentration is also measured by the UMF value.
Contraindications
Do not use in children. Due to its potent effects, it should be avoided in young children when using the honey directly.
In cosmetic products such as creams containing a small proportion, follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
If you are diabetic, you should monitor its consumption due to the glucose and fructose content. In general, honey consumption is contraindicated for diabetes.
Other people can use this product in moderation without risks.
Manuka Honey and Helicobacter Pylori
If you want to cure a bacterial infection or a skin ulcer, you need to prepare a poultice with it. You can use a gauze and apply it to the area. You should change it several times a day for it to have a potent effect and be effective.
Manuka Honey is good for digestive discomfort and stomach ulcers caused by the *Helicobacter Pylori* bacteria. To benefit from it, you need to consume it just like any other honey. Once it reaches the stomach, it is diluted and absorbed, spreading its active ingredients throughout the body. This treatment has been clinically tested, and Manuka honey for eliminating Helicobacter Pylori is effective. This bacteria is responsible for a large number of stomach and duodenal ulcers.
It is a remedy for groups of staphylococci, including the aureus strain, which is resistant to the antibiotic methicillin but not to the antibacterial action of this honey.
It improves the digestive system, hiatal hernia, heartburn, etc.
How are the flowers of Leptospermum scoparium (Manuka) like?
This species is endemic to the island of New Zealand, Australia, and Tasmania. It grows throughout the region, especially near dry coastal areas. This gives it properties different from other flowers. The lack of water results in a higher concentration of active principles.
Manuka is a small evergreen tree with short green leaves and thorns. The flowers are of varied colors, ranging from white to pink. It is a very beautiful plant that, when in full bloom, creates spectacular landscapes.
Traditional medicine still uses it as a tonic to treat skin conditions and revitalize the human body.
Antioxidants in Honey
Manuka honey is recognized for containing flavonoids, organic acids, and enzymes. Flavonoids are natural antioxidants that improve the longevity of skin cells, prevent premature aging, and protect against free radicals, which are an inexhaustible source of cellular destruction.
Price
Due to its pesticide-free nature and its protected designation of origin, it is a highly sought-after product today, both by hospitals and clinics that perform dermatological treatments and by people who want to take advantage of its therapeutic action at home.
The areas where the Manuka tree grows are protected and controlled, so access is restricted, and honey collection is quota-based. This makes it more expensive than other types of honey. A 250g jar of Manuka honey costs around $18, although those that are purer and more beneficial for health can reach $40. You can buy manuka honey in jars of 250ml, 500, or even 1kg. But since you will use it for its therapeutic action, the small jar will be enough.
Hello, greetings. I bought Manuka honey with 550 mg yesterday to heal a wound, but the UMF is not indicated. Please help me.
Hi Hortensia, if it’s not indicated, don’t worry—it’s for domestic use. Higher grades are meant for medical applications.
Dear Marta, I did some research on Manuka honey, and it seems very interesting. I’m planning to buy it to treat skin cancer, specifically on my nose. Fortunately, the cancer is benign.
Which MGO factor do you recommend—400 or 550? I’ll be waiting for your comments. Thanks.
Hello. I bought Manuka honey 10+. My question is: does it help with pollen allergies? If so, what dosage should I take? Thanks.
Hi, I bought 5+ and applied it to two second-degree burns on my neck and arm. In just two days, my wounds have improved a lot, but I’m still using the prescribed antibiotic.
That’s great, Silvia! If you’d like, share your progress with us after some time. Thanks for sharing your experience with Manuka honey and burns.
Good morning,
I need to buy a dermatological cream containing Manuka honey. Which one do you recommend?
Thanks.
It depends on what you want to treat, Cristina.
What UMF rating should Manuka honey have for Helicobacter pylori?
MGO 550+ or UMF 20+. The latter is more expensive but very effective. I’m alternating between the two because MGO 550 is cheaper but also works well.
With MGO honey, I take a teaspoon of coffee half an hour before meals—three times a day.
With UMF 20+, I take a teaspoon of coffee an hour before lunch.
I started a week ago, so I haven’t noticed any improvement yet. I was told results should be visible in about three months.
What were the results of your treatment?
Isabel, please share if you were able to eliminate H. pylori.
Where can I buy Manuka honey?
I find this type of honey very interesting. I’d like to know if my 11-year-old daughter can take UMF 15+. She is frequently diagnosed with E. coli in her urinary tract and is constantly on antibiotics. The infection comes and goes.
I want to try something natural. Please help me.
Best regards,
Johan Villamar
Guayaquil, Ecuador
Hi Johan,
I recommend reading Dr. Max Gerson’s book Healing Cancer with the Gerson Therapy. While it may not seem directly related to your daughter’s condition, his methods help with many diseases. You might find relief for your little one through this approach.
Everything this doctor recommends is natural.
Best wishes for your daughter’s recovery.
Hi Johan,
My wife had the same issue for decades (she’s 70 years old). Urologists prescribed lifelong antibiotics because the E. coli bacteria kept multiplying, potentially harming her kidneys.
However, those antibiotics started affecting her skin, causing eczema with unbearable itching. We prayed to God for help, and while searching the internet, I discovered this natural wonder.
I bought the highest grade available, UMF 20+, and she started taking it for about eight days before her urologist appointment. During the cystoscopy, the doctor was shocked—her bladder was completely clean and healthier than ever!
We thank God for guiding us. It was truly a miracle. She took one tablespoon of Manuka honey daily.
I suggest giving your daughter a lower grade (UMF 10+) for about 15 days and believing in God’s power.
May God bless you.
How can I get this honey?
Which Manuka honey is best for Helicobacter pylori, and how should it be taken? I have MGO 550.
Where can I buy it in Buenos Aires, Argentina?
I’d also like to know if it’s available in Buenos Aires. I’ve been trying to find it without success.
From the first day I tried it, I saw my skin improve like never before, and it was only UMF 5+. Now I bought UMF 10+, and it’s my best medicine for everything!
It’s fantastic and delicious—you won’t regret it!
I bought UMF 20+ on Amazon, which is recommended for Helicobacter pylori. It should arrive on the 21st.
I’ve heard it’s also very effective for hives. I have atopic skin, so I’ll let you all know how it goes.
Hi Isabel,
Let me know how Manuka honey worked for treating Helicobacter. How much did you take? I’m about to order it for the same issue.
Thanks!
Did it eliminate H. pylori?
Good morning!
Can this honey help eliminate urinary tract infections caused by E. coli in an 8-year-old girl?
Thanks!
My dog has a skin ulcer, and the vet recommended Manuka honey. What do you think?
I’ve had discomfort in the pit of my stomach for weeks—bloating, occasional flatulence, and was diagnosed with nervous colitis.
I read about UMF 20+ honey, and after two days of taking it, the discomfort is disappearing! It’s incredible!
On the first day, I took a teaspoon three times a day. On the second day, just twice. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow and adjust accordingly.
I read that results become noticeable after three months. Hopefully, this helps someone else!
Good morning,
My husband has had ulcerative colitis for 18 years, but it’s currently stable. We’ve been recommended Manuka honey, but we’re unsure if it’s advisable, as it might boost his immune system too much and cause harm.
Best regards,
Rosa
Hi, I bought Manuka honey 18+, but the jar doesn’t mention UMF, only IIA 18+.
I paid $105.50, which is quite expensive for a 250g jar. Is it good quality?
I bought Manuka honey with factor 12. Will it help with H. pylori?
Did it eliminate H. pylori? How did you feel?
Karina, UMF 12 is too low to eliminate the bacteria.
Hi, I’ve read a lot about this honey’s benefits, but I’d like to know which one I should take.
I’ve had H. pylori for six years, and despite taking doctor-prescribed medication, nothing has worked.
No matter what I eat, I always have stomach issues—pain, strange noises, and severe cramps that make me break out in a cold sweat.
Please respond.
Where can I buy Manuka honey?
I develop keloids, and I haven’t found anything effective to stop them from growing. Do you think this could help?
I take it daily. I suffer from irritable bowel syndrome, and all the symptoms have disappeared. It’s effective!
Thank you for sharing your experience, Dasy. This information may help others with IBS.
Hi! Good afternoon! I have knowledge of Manuka honey because I’m a distributor in Mexico.
Could you send me a picture of the jar? I’ll gladly tell you what UMF rating it has!
Hi Suri, could you give me more information?
I’m from Veracruz. Where can I buy it? Please respond.
